Chaloem Phra Kiat Banyan Tree

This a large banyan tree referred to as “Sai Ngam”. The local name is “Sai Thong”, while the academic name is “Sai Yoy” or Ficus Benjamina. The tree is estimated to be approximately 200 years old. The branches spread out and send down new roots that develop into trunks. This single sprawling tree covers an area of approximately 0.32 hectares (2 rai) near the bank of the Mun River at Moo 12, Mai Village, Tha Chang Sub-district, Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Nakhon Ratchasima, in a public area of 1.28 hectares (8 rai).  The tree is still expanding, with branches growing 1 meter per year. This tree provides a shady, cool atmosphere and natural beauty. This fig tree is an important part of the ecosystem providing food, especially the yellow fruits, and protection for birds and other animals.
