Ancient Elephant Landscape

The Ancient Elephants Herd is a sculpture of a group of elephants of various genera and from various ages that have been discovered in the sandpits in Tha Chang, Chang Thong, and Phra Phut sub-districts of Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Nakhon Ratchasima. From 1995 until the present, ancient elephants have been found in 11 sandpits.  The ancient elephants comprise 10 genera out of 55 genera known worldwide, the highest number of genera in the world from one area. The ages range from 16 million to ten thousand years ago.  The genera are as follows: the 4-tusked Gomphotherium, Prodeinotherium, the shovel-tusked Protanancus, the 4-tusked Tetralophodon, Stegolophodon, Zygolophodon, Deinotherium, Sinomastodon, Stegodon and Elephas.
