Chumphon Gate and Thao Suranaree Monument

Chumphon Gate is the only one remaining section of the wall surrounding Nakhon Ratchasima city, which had a length of approximately 5,220 meters and a height of 6 meters. Sema stones or boundary markers were placed every 1.2 meters along the wall. The wall was built in the year 1,656 A.D. during the reign of King Narai the Great of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. The walled city was built under the orders of King Narai as the main city of the kingdom on the Esarn plateau. The wall was built of sandstone and laterite, and it is thought that this material came from stone ruins that had deteriorated at that time. In front of the gate, there is a heroine monument of Nakhon Ratchasima, Thao Suranaree or Ya Mo.
